Justine F. Chen, composer
Brooklyn native composer/violinist Justine F. Chen has received numerous prestigious awards. Her works have been commissioned and performed by New York City Opera, New York City Ballet, The Juilliard School, and the New York Festival of Song.

On a work written for the Juilliard Dance Ensemble, the New York Times wrote, “Chen… blended popular dance rhythms into the kind of propulsive, emotionally resonant score that choreographers tend to dream of.” Her first opera, a computer-enhanced chamber work The Maiden Tower, was initially presented at Juilliard, then featured in NYCO’s VOX 2006 Showcase of American Composers, and was most recently performed by Chants Libres in Montréal, December 2008. When featured in NYCO’s VOX 2008, her opera Jeanne was described by the Times as “lyrical, atmospheric... striking… balanc[ing] despair and humor.”

As composer-in-residence for Long Leaf Opera, she wrote Three, Two, One - BANG! a youth opera based on Macbeth, which was premiered June 2008.

In 2005, she completed her doctoral studies in composition at Juilliard, where she also received her Bachelor’s and Master’s degrees in violin and composition. In April 2010, her song cycle Philomel will be performed by Lucy Shelton and Beta Collide. Her most recent project is a children’s opera for North Carolina Opera due for performance in 2010-2011.
